As a trained teacher, I really enjoy passing on my passion for oil paints to others. I offer classes for small groups (no more than 4) or 1:1 tuition for all ages and abilities.

Introduction to oils

2 Day Course (10-3pm) £150  (Max 4 participants)

1 Day Course (10-3pm) £75    (Max 4 participants)

The introductory courses are suitable for absolute beginners and those who wish to further explore oil paints.

I will take you through the very basics of using oil paint on day 1 - we will cover the golden rules of using oil paint and discover how different mediums are used to thin or fill the paint; practice using different brushes and pallet knives to give different effects; we will study things like colour mixing and how colour can create depth and volume; and we will do several exercies, with step-by-step guidance, leading up to painting a still life in the afternoon.

On day 2, you will apply the techniques covered on day 1 and move on to create your very own landscape painting. I will help you discover the tricks of composition, colour and control to ensure that your paintings capture the essence and ‘feel’ of a place as well as just the likeness.

All materials will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch.

Continuing with oils

2 Day Course (10-3pm) £150

So you've made a start with oil paints, perhaps attended one of my beginner courses, but now you want to refine your practice and/or learn a few more advanced techniques. This is the perfect course for you. We will look deeper into the composition of a painting, use pallet knives to create 'impasto' work and see how 'glazing' can create lustrous results. Weather permitting we will go outside and paint 'en plein air'. All materials will be provided. Bring a packed lunch. If you are a group of 3-4 friends and wish to book an exclusive course, a date to suit your group can be arranged.

Last of the Snow

LAST OF THE SNOW

Brecon Beacons from Hay Bluff - Oil on Canvas

Tip 1 - Don't force it!

I used to paint 'en plein air' but doing the preparatory sketches for this painting taught me not to be so stupid! It took me days to thaw out. When painting outside I feel rushed to capture fleeting glimpses of infinitely changing light and movement. Now, when a view inspires me, I take plenty of photos, make a very quick pencil sketch or two and always a video if I can. This means that when I'm back in my studio, I have time to reflect on the emotion of the place and to study that snapshot in time in detail. I do also try to have the soundscape playing on loop in my earphones when I paint the final draft as this provides the atmosphere of a setting.

This approach doesn't necessarily mean that I lose spontoneity - I completed this painting in just one afternoon - because I was prepared, I know what I was looking for and didn't have to force it. It just flowed - and it's probably my favourite painting.
