About Me

"Former Farmer, Turned Teacher, Now Professional Painter"

I live just outside Llanover, near Abergavenny, overlooking the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal in a house called Ty'r Eos y Coed (which means House of Nightingale Wood) with my wife, Nicola, and our daughter, Beth.

Having been part of the leadership team at a highly regarded art-focussed school in Bath for 13 years, I became a full-time professional artist in 2019, as well as undertaking an MA at the Cardiff School of Art and Design in which I graduated with distinction.

I developed my love of the wild and beautiful landscapes of Mid Wales, that are a constant source of inspiration, on my family's dairy farm at Cantref, near Brecon, where I was born and brought up and where I worked for a few years after graduating with a degree in Agriculture.

I am a self taught artist, and was initially heavily influenced by the late Meg Stevens RCA, who gave me much advice while she was painting on our farm. I have also looked closely at the early twentieth century British impressionists such as Sir George Clausen, Laura Knight and Henry Herbert La Thangue.

More recently, I am fascinated by artists who achieve the enigmatic atmosphere or suspended stillness to which I aspire such as the Dutch master, Johannes Vermeer; the Danish painter Wilhelm Hammershoi; as well as the Americans Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper. I also adore the way in which the Spanish impressionist Joaquin Sorolla painted light.

Artist's Statement

"I am interested in the tension between presence and absence, intimacy and emptiness, creating paintings that invite contemplation rather than explanation."

My work connects the beauty of the Welsh landscape with lived human experience, exploring how place carries memory, presence and loss.

Working predominantly in oil paint, I seek not only to capture the physical essence of Wales — its geography, atmosphere and texture — but also the emotional and psychological resonance held within its landscapes and interiors. Whether painting a vast coastline or a quiet historical room, I am drawn to spaces shaped by time, absence and the traces of those who have passed through them.

I am particularly drawn to the losses of Wales — lost cultural heritage, the struggle for the survival of language, stolen landscapes and the exploitation of land and people — and to the ways these histories continue to echo through both the natural and built environment. I am fascinated by how memory inhabits spaces, and how places can embody what has been forgotten, displaced or left behind.

The historical interiors I paint are a continuation of this exploration. Empty rooms, worn surfaces and fading light become repositories of memory and enigma — spaces where time appears momentarily paused. I am interested in the tension between presence and absence, intimacy and emptiness, creating paintings that invite contemplation rather than explanation.

Painting is an instinctive and deeply physical process for me. Alongside paint, I also use poetry and text to deepen the emotional resonance of the work, creating relationships between image and language that invite a more immersive response.

As a self-taught artist, my practice has evolved through intuition, experimentation and experience rather than formal convention, allowing the work to develop its own visual language over time.
